Indications
- Treatment of oral candidiasis
- Treatment of gastrointestinal candidiasis
- Eradication of fungal colonization in the mouth and gastrointestinal tract
- Treatment of super infections due to gram-positive bacteria
- Treatment of dermatomycoses like Tinea pedis (Athlete's foot), Tinea corporis (Tinea circinata), Tinea cruris, Candidial infections, Tinea versicolor, Infections of the skin, Perianal infections, Stomatitis angularis (cheilitis), Balanoposthitis, Otitis externa
- Rapid alleviating effect on pruritus
Pharmacology
- Antifungal activity against common dermatophytes and yeasts
- Antibacterial activity against certain gram-positive bacilli and cocci
- Inhibition of demethylation step in ergosterol biosynthesis
- Disruption in production of ergosterol leading to membrane disruption in fungal cells
Dosage
- Miconazole Oral Gel dosage for oropharyngeal candidosis in infants, adults, and children
- Miconazole Oral Gel dosage for gastrointestinal tract candidosis in infants, children, and adults
- Miconazole Cream dosage for tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, cutaneous candidiasis, and tinea versicolor
Administration
- Application 2-4 times a day directly to the affected area with a clean finger
- Continued treatment for at least a week after symptoms have disappeared
- Removal of dental prosthesis at night for oral candidosis
Interaction
- Avoid concomitant treatment with Terfenadine, Astemizole, and Cisapride
- Potential delay in Phenytoin and Cyclosporine metabolism
Contraindications
- Not to be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to the active ingredient
Side Effects
- Occasional nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea with long-term use
- Rare allergic reactions
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoid in pregnant women if possible
- Caution in nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Monitoring of anti-coagulant effect if used concomitantly
- Monitoring of phenytoin plasma level if used concomitantly
- Caution in infants and young children to avoid throat obstruction
Overdose Effects
- Accidental overdosage may cause vomiting and diarrhea
- Symptomatic and supportive treatment for overdose
