Indications
- Treats onychomycosis of the toenail or fingernail
- Treats Tinea Capitis
- Treats fungal infections of the skin
- Treats yeast infections of the skin
- Treats Pityriasis (tinea) versicolor
Pharmacology
- Inhibits biosynthesis of Ergosterol
- Fungicidal
- Active against Tricophyton Mentagrophyte and Trichophyton Rubrum
Dosage & Administration
- Different dosage for fingernail and toenail onychomycosis
- Body weight-based dosage for granules
- Different duration for different types of skin infections
- Relief of clinical symptoms occurs within a few days
Interaction
- Inhibitor of the CYP450 2D6 isozyme
- Requires careful monitoring with co-administered drugs
Contraindications
- Contra-indicated in individuals hypersensitive to terbinafine
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal symptoms
- Liver test abnormalities
- Rashes and urticaria
- Taste disturbances
- Idiosyncratic and symptomatic hepatic injury
- Serious skin reactions
- Severe neutropenia and thrombocytopenia
- Angioedema and allergic reactions
- Malaise, fatigue, vomiting, arthralgia, myalgia, hair loss
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy
- Present in the breast milk of nursing mothers
- Excreted in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Risk of liver failure
- Avoid contact with eyes for cream
- Not recommended for patients with chronic or active liver disease
- Assessment of pre-existing liver disease before prescribing
- Pretreatment serum transaminase teste advised
Use in Special Populations
- Safety and efficacy not established in pediatric patients
- No evidence of different dosages or side-effects in elderly patients
Overdose Effects
- Limited clinical overdose experience
- Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness
