Description
- Amezol is an antibiotic medication used for treating and preventing viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections such as cold, cough, flu, vaginal infections, liver, skin, joint, brain, and respiratory tract infections.
Dosage instructions
- Dosage and administration instructions are provided for various conditions such as trichomoniasis, intestinal amoebiasis, extra-intestinal & asymptomatic amoebiasis, giardiasis, acute ulcerative gingivitis, acute dental infections, bacterial vaginosis, leg ulcers and pressure sores, anaerobic infections, surgical prophylaxis, and use of vaginal gel and suppository.
Pharmacology
- Metronidazole is a member of the imidazole class of antibacterial drugs and is classified therapeutically as an antiprotozoal agent. The 5-nitro group of Metronidazole is reduced by anaerobes metabolically. Studies have demonstrated that the reduced form of this drug interacts with DNA and gives bactericidal action of Metronidazole.
Indications
- Amezol is indicated for the prevention of post-operative infections due to anaerobic bacteria, treatment of septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, brain abscess, pelvic abscess, pelvic cellulitis, post-operative wound infections caused by anaerobes, urogenital trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, all forms of amoebiasis, giardiasis, acute ulcerative gingivitis, anaerobically infected leg ulcers and pressure sores, acute dental infections due to anaerobic organisms, and antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis.
Interaction
- Amezol may interact with Disulfiram, Alcohol, Oral anticoagulant therapy, Lithium, Cyclosporin, Phenytoin or phenobarbital, 5-Fluorouracil, and Busulfan.
Contraindications
- Metronidazole is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or other Nitroimidazole derivatives.
Side effects
- Possible side effects of Amezol include metallic taste, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, and rashes.
Pregnancy and lactation
- US FDA Pregnancy Category of Metronidazole is B. Caution should be exercised when Metronidazole is administered to a nursing woman.
Precautions and warnings
- Patients taking Amezol should be monitored for adverse reactions such as peripheral or central neuropathy and cautioned that Amezol may darken urine.
Uses in special populations
- Amezol should be administered with caution to patients with hepatic encephalopathy, and in patients with hepatic or renal impairment, the dosage of Amezol may need to be adjusted.
