Dosage Recommendations

  • 200 mg tid for 7 days
  • 800 mg in the morning and 1-2 gm at night for 2 days
  • 2 gm as a single dose for 1 day
  • 100 mg tid for children aged 7-10 yrs
  • 50 mg tid for children aged 1-3 yrs
  • 400-800 mg tid for 5-10 days for extra-intestinal & asymptomatic amoebiasis
  • 500 mg once daily for children aged 1-3 yrs for giardiasis
  • 200 mg tid for 3 days for acute ulcerative gingivitis
  • 400 mg tid for 7 days for leg ulcers and pressure sores
  • 800 mg initially and then 400 mg tid for 7 days for anaerobic infections

Indications

  • Prevention of post-operative infections due to anaerobic bacteria
  • Treatment of septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, brain abscess, pelvic abscess, pelvic cellulitis, post-operative wound infections caused by anaerobes
  • Urogenital trichomoniasis
  • Bacterial vaginosis
  • Amoebiasis (intestinal, extra-intestinal disease and symptomless cyst passers)
  • Giardiasis
  • Acute ulcerative gingivitis
  • Anaerobically infected leg ulcers, pressure sores
  • Acute dental infections due to anaerobic organisms
  • Antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis

Pharmacological Classification

Imidazole class of antibacterial drug, antiprotozoal agent

Mechanism of Action

Reduction of the 5-nitro group by anaerobes metabolically, interaction with DNA, bactericidal action

  • Disulfiram
  • Alcohol
  • Oral anticoagulant therapy (warfarin type)

  • Cyclosporin
  • Phenytoin or phenobarbital
  • 5-Fluorouracil
  • Busulfan

Contraindications

History of hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or other Nitroimidazole derivatives

  • Hematological tests should be carried out regularly
  • Monitoring for adverse reactions like peripheral or central neuropathy
  • Administration with caution to patients with hepatic encephalopathy

Overdose Effects

Symptoms may include vomiting, ataxia, slight disorientation. No specific antidote available
