Dosage Administration
- Recommended dose of 200 mg tid or 400 mg bid for 7 days for Trichomoniasis in adults
- 800 mg in the morning and 1-2 gm at night for 2 days for Trichomoniasis
- 2 gm as a single dose for 1 day for Trichomoniasis
- 400-800 mg tid for 5-10 days for Extra-intestinal & Asymptomatic amoebiasis in adults
- 7.5 mg/kg tid for Anaerobic infections in children
Pharmacology
- Member of the imidazole class of antibacterial drugs
- Classified as an antiprotozoal agent
- Interacts with DNA and gives bactericidal action
Indications
- Prevention of post-operative infections due to anaerobic bacteria
- Treatment of septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, brain abscess
- Treatment of trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, amoebiasis, giardiasis
- Treatment of acute ulcerative gingivitis, anaerobically infected leg ulcers
- Treatment of acute dental infections and antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis
Interaction
- Potential interaction with Disulfiram, Alcohol, Lithium, Cyclosporin, Phenytoin, 5-Fluorouracil, Busulfan
- Recommended monitoring of anticoagulant therapy with warfarin during treatment
Contraindications
- Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or Nitroimidazole derivatives
