Indications

  • Prevention of post-operative infections due to anaerobic bacteria
  • Treatment of septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, brain abscess
  • Pelvic abscess, pelvic cellulitis, post-operative wound infections
  • Urogenital trichomoniasis
  • Bacterial vaginosis
  • Amoebiasis (intestinal, extra-intestinal disease, symptomless cyst passers)
  • Giardiasis
  • Acute ulcerative gingivitis
  • Anaerobically infected leg ulcers, pressure sores
  • Acute dental infections due to anaerobic organisms
  • Antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis

Pharmacology

  • Belongs to imidazole class of antibacterial drug
  • Therapeutically classified as an antiprotozoal agent
  • 5-nitro group reduced by anaerobes metabolically
  • Interacts with DNA and provides bactericidal action

  • Contraindicated in patients with history of hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or other Nitroimidazole derivatives
