It is used for the treatment and prevention of viral and parasitic infections, as well as bacterial infections such as cold, cough, flu, and vaginal infections. It also controls liver, skin, joints, brain, and respiratory tract infections.

Indications
- Prevention of post-operative infections due to anaerobic bacteria
- Treatment of septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, brain abscess, pelvic abscess, pelvic cellulitis, post-operative wound infections caused by anaerobes
- Treatment of urogenital trichomoniasis
- Bacterial vaginosis
- All forms of amoebiasis
- Giardiasis
- Acute ulcerative gingivitis
- Anaerobically infected leg ulcers and pressure sores
- Acute dental infections due to anaerobic organisms
- Antibiotic associated pseudomembranous colitis
Mode of Action
- Metronidazole is reduced by anaerobes metabolically
- The reduced form of this drug interacts with DNA and provides bactericidal action
Interaction
- Disulfiram: Psychotic reactions reported with concurrent use
- Alcohol: Possibility of disulfiram-like reaction, potentiation of anticoagulant effect
- Lithium: Plasma levels may be increased
- Cyclosporin: Serum levels should be closely monitored
- Phenytoin or phenobarbital: Increased elimination of Metronidazole
- 5-Fluorouracil: Reduced clearance causing increased toxicity
- Busulfan: Increased plasma levels may lead to severe toxicity
Contraindications
- Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or other Nitroimidazole derivatives
