Description
Metronidazole is indicated in the treatment of various infections caused by bacteria and parasites such as post-operative infections, septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, brain abscess, pelvic abscess, pelvic cellulitis, trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, amoebiasis, giardiasis, acute ulcerative gingivitis, anaerobically infected leg ulcers, dental infections, and more.

Dosage Instructions
- 200 mg tid or 400 mg bid for 7 days for adults with trichomoniasis
- 2 gm as a single dose for 1 day for children with trichomoniasis
- 800 mg tid for 5 days for adults with intestinal amoebiasis
- 2 gm once daily for 3 days for adults with giardiasis
- 400 mg tid for 7 days for adults with bacterial vaginosis
- 800 mg initially then 400 mg tid for 7 days for adults with anaerobic infections
- One applicator full of Metronidazole gel intravaginally once or twice a day for 5 days
- 1 g every 8 hours for 3 days, then 1 g every 12 hours for adults with anaerobic infections using suppository
- Infuse 500 mg 8 hourly for adults and children over 12 years during IV infusion

Interaction Warnings
- Potential psychotic reactions when used with disulfiram
- Avoid alcohol consumption during therapy
- Potentiation of anticoagulant effect when used with oral anticoagulants
- Possible increase in plasma levels of lithium when used concomitantly
- Close monitoring required when co-administered with cyclosporin, phenytoin, phenobarbital, 5-fluorouracil, and busulfan
