Indications
- Prevention of post-operative infections due to anaerobic bacteria
- Treatment of septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, brain abscess, pelvic abscess, pelvic cellulitis
- Treatment of urogenital trichomoniasis
- Bacterial vaginosis
- Amoebiasis (intestinal and extra-intestinal)
- Giardiasis
- Acute ulcerative gingivitis
- Anaerobically infected leg ulcers and pressure sores
- Acute dental infections due to anaerobic organisms
Mode of Action
- Reduction of 5-nitro group by anaerobes leading to bactericidal action by interaction with DNA
Dosage & Administration
- Tablet and Suspension:
- Variable dosages for different conditions and age groups
- Vaginal Gel:
- One applicator full intravaginally once or twice a day for 5 days
- Suppository:
- Different dosages for adults and children
- IV Infusion:
- Specific dosage for adults and children
Interactions
- Disulfiram: Psychotic reactions reported concurrently
- Alcohol: Avoid due to potential disulfiram-like reaction
- Lithium: May increase plasma levels
- Cyclosporin: Requires close monitoring when co-administered
- Phenytoin or phenobarbital: Increased elimination of Metfil
- 5-Fluorouracil: Reduced clearance resulting in increased toxicity
- Busulfan: May increase plasma levels leading to toxicity

- Hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or other Nitroimidazole derivatives
