Pharmacology

  • Member of the imidazole class of antibacterial drug

Dosage & Administration

  • Dosage varies for trichomoniasis, intestinal amoebiasis, extra-intestinal & asymptomatic amoebiasis, giardiasis, acute ulcerative gingivitis, acute dental infections, bacterial vaginosis, leg ulcers and pressure sores, anaerobic infections, surgical prophylaxis
  • Different dosages for adults and children in different age groups
  • Recommendations for vaginal gel and suppository administration
  • IV infusion dosage for adults and children over 12 years

Interaction

  • Disulfiram may lead to psychotic reactions if used concurrently
  • Alcohol consumption during therapy and for at least one day afterwards should be avoided
  • Potential interaction with oral anticoagulant therapy (warfarin type), lithium, cyclosporin, phenytoin or phenobarbital, 5-fluorouracil, and busulfan

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or other Nitroimidazole derivatives
