Indications
- Prevention of post-operative infections due to anaerobic bacteria

Pharmacology
- Member of the imidazole class of antibacterial drug
- Classified therapeutically as an antiprotozoal agent
- 5-nitro group undergoes metabolic reduction by anaerobes
- Interacts with DNA, exhibiting bactericidal action
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage varies for trichomoniasis, intestinal amoebiasis, extra-intestinal & asymptomatic amoebiasis, giardiasis, acute ulcerative gingivitis, acute dental infections, bacterial vaginosis, leg ulcers and pressure sores, anaerobic infections, surgical prophylaxis
- Different dosages for adults and children in different age groups
- Recommendations for vaginal gel and suppository administration
- IV infusion dosage for adults and children over 12 years
Interaction
- Disulfiram may lead to psychotic reactions if used concurrently
- Alcohol consumption during therapy and for at least one day afterwards should be avoided
- Potential interaction with oral anticoagulant therapy (warfarin type), lithium, cyclosporin, phenytoin or phenobarbital, 5-fluorouracil, and busulfan
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or other Nitroimidazole derivatives
