Pharmacology

  • Member of the imidazole class of antibacterial drug
  • Antiprotozoal agent
  • 5-nitro group is reduced by anaerobes metabolically
  • Interacts with DNA and gives bactericidal action

Dosage & Administration

Interaction

  • Disulfiram: may cause psychotic reactions when used concurrently
  • Alcohol: should not be consumed during therapy
  • Warfarin: may potentiate the anticoagulant effect
  • Lithium: may increase plasma levels of lithium
  • Cyclosporin: serum levels should be closely monitored when co-administered
  • Phenytoin or phenobarbital: may increase elimination of Metra
  • 5-Fluorouracil: may reduce clearance of 5-fluorouracil
  • Busulfan: may increase plasma levels of busulfan

  • Hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or other Nitroimidazole derivatives

  • Hemodialysis: re-administration required immediately after dialysis
  • Peritoneal dialysis: no routine adjustment in dosage required

  • Reported symptoms include vomiting, ataxia, and slight disorientation
