Indications
- Prevention of post-operative infections due to anaerobic bacteria

Pharmacology
- Member of the imidazole class of antibacterial drug
- Antiprotozoal agent
- 5-nitro group is reduced by anaerobes metabolically
- Interacts with DNA and gives bactericidal action
Dosage & Administration
- Available in Tablet, Suspension, Vaginal Gel, Suppository, and IV Infusion
- Various dosages for different diseases and age groups
Interaction
- Disulfiram: may cause psychotic reactions when used concurrently
- Alcohol: should not be consumed during therapy
- Warfarin: may potentiate the anticoagulant effect
- Lithium: may increase plasma levels of lithium
- Cyclosporin: serum levels should be closely monitored when co-administered
- Phenytoin or phenobarbital: may increase elimination of Metra
- 5-Fluorouracil: may reduce clearance of 5-fluorouracil
- Busulfan: may increase plasma levels of busulfan
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or other Nitroimidazole derivatives

Use in Special Populations
- Hepatic impairment: dosing adjustment and caution advised
- Renal impairment: no reduction in dosage required
- Hemodialysis: re-administration required immediately after dialysis
- Peritoneal dialysis: no routine adjustment in dosage required

- Reported symptoms include vomiting, ataxia, and slight disorientation
