  • Metryl 400 mg Tablet is an antibiotic medication that prevents the growth of bacteria and parasites. It is used for the treatment and prevention of viral, parasitic, and bacterial infections such as cold, flu, vaginal infections, liver infections, skin infections, joint infections, brain infections, and respiratory tract infections.

Dosage and Administration

  • Recommended dosage varies for different conditions and age groups, including Trichomoniasis, Intestinal Amoebiasis, Extra-intestinal & Asymptomatic Amoebiasis, Giardiasis, Acute ulcerative gingivitis, Acute dental infections, Bacterial Vaginosis, Leg ulcers and pressure sores, Anaerobic infections, Surgical prophylaxis.

Pharmacology

  • Metronidazole is a member of the imidazole class of antibacterial drugs and is classified therapeutically as an antiprotozoal agent. The 5-nitro group of Metronidazole is reduced by anaerobes metabolically, which interacts with DNA and gives bactericidal action.

Indications

  • Prevention of post-operative infections due to anaerobic bacteria, treatment of septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, brain abscess, pelvic abscess, pelvic cellulitis, post-operative wound infections caused by anaerobes, urogenital trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, all forms of amoebiasis, giardiasis, acute ulcerative gingivitis, anaerobically infected leg ulcers and pressure sores, acute dental infections, and antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis.

Interaction

  • Interacts with Disulfiram, Alcohol, Oral anticoagulant therapy, Lithium, Cyclosporin, Phenytoin or phenobarbital, 5-Fluorouracil, Busulfan.

Contraindications

  • Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or other Nitroimidazole derivatives.

Side Effects

  • Metallic taste, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, rashes.

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • US FDA Pregnancy Category B. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Recommended hematological tests, caution in hepatic encephalopathy patients, darkening of urine.

Use in Special Populations

  • Hepatic impairment, Renal impairment.

Overdose Effects

  • Limited symptoms of vomiting, ataxia, slight disorientation. Supportive treatment recommended.
