Indications
- Prevention of post-operative infections due to anaerobic bacteria
- Treatment of septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, brain abscess, pelvic abscess

Pharmacology
- Metronidazole belongs to the imidazole class of antibacterial drugs
- It is classified therapeutically as an antiprotozoal agent
- The 5-nitro group of Metronidazole is reduced by anaerobes metabolically
- The reduced form of Metronidazole interacts with DNA and provides bactericidal action
Dosage & Administration
- Available in tablets, suspensions, vaginal gel, suppository, and IV infusion forms
- Dosage varies for trichomoniasis, intestinal amoebiasis, extra-intestinal & asymptomatic amoebiasis, giardiasis, acute ulcerative gingivitis, acute dental infections, bacterial vaginosis, leg ulcers and pressure sores, anaerobic infections, surgical prophylaxis
- Vaginal gel recommended dose is one applicator full intravaginally once or twice a day for 5 days
- IV infusion should be administered at a rate of 5 ml/minute
Interactions
- Potential interactions with disulfiram, alcohol, oral anticoagulants, lithium, cyclosporin, phenytoin/phenobarbital, 5-fluorouracil, busulfan
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or other Nitroimidazole derivatives

Precautions & Warnings

Use in Special Populations
- Dosage reduction recommended for patients with hepatic impairment
- No routine adjustment in the dosage for patients with renal impairment
Overdose Effects
- Reported symptoms include vomiting, ataxia, slight disorientation
- No specific antidote
