- Treatment of post-operative wound infections caused by anaerobes

- Treatment of all forms of amoebiasis
- Treatment of giardiasis
- Treatment of acute ulcerative gingivitis
- Treatment of anaerobically infected leg ulcers and pressure sores
- Treatment of acute dental infections due to anaerobic organisms
- Treatment of antibiotic associated pseudomembranus colitis
- Pharmacology:
- Metronidazole is a member of the imidazole class of antibacterial drug
- Classified therapeutically as an antiprotozoal agent
- The 5-nitro group of Metronidazole is reduced by anaerobes metabolically
- Interacts with DNA and gives bactericidal action of Metronidazole

- Interaction:
- Disulfiram interaction
- Alcohol interaction
- Lithium interaction

- Contraindications:
- Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or other Nitroimidazole derivatives
