Indications
- Prevention of post-operative infections due to anaerobic bacteria

Pharmacology
Metronidazole is a member of the imidazole class of antibacterial drug and is classified therapeutically as an antiprotozoal agent.
Dosage & Administration
- Different dosages for trichomoniasis in adults and children
- Specific dosages for intestinal amoebiasis and extra-intestinal & asymptomatic amoebiasis
- Dosages for giardiasis in adults and children
- Dosages for acute ulcerative gingivitis in adults and children
- Treatment dosages for bacterial vaginosis, leg ulcers and pressure sores, anaerobic infections, and surgical prophylaxis
- Dosage recommendations for the vaginal gel, suppository, and IV infusion
Interaction
- Disulfiram may cause psychotic reactions when used concurrently
- Avoid alcohol consumption during therapy
- Potentiation of anticoagulant effect with oral anticoagulant therapy
- Possible interactions with lithium, cyclosporin, phenytoin, phenobarbital, 5-fluorouracil, and busulfan
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or other Nitroimidazole derivatives.

Pregnancy & Lactation

- Use with caution in patients with hepatic encephalopathy
- May darken urine
Use in Special Populations
- Recommended caution in patients with hepatic impairment
- Dosage adjustment may be necessary in renal impairment
- No routine adjustment in the dosage for patients undergoing dialysis
Overdose Effects
Symptoms limited to vomiting, ataxia, and slight disorientation for reported overdoses up to 12 g. No specific antidote available.
