Indications
- Amoebiasis (Intestinal and hepatic)
- Giardiasis
- Trichomoniasis
- Bacterial vaginosis
- Treatment of susceptible anaerobic infections
Pharmacology
- Active against protozoa and anaerobic bacteria
- Interacts with DNA to cause destruction of helical DNA structure
- Inhibition of protein synthesis
- Cell death in susceptible organisms
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 500 mg twice a day for 5 days
- Child dosage: 10-25 mg per kg body weight in two divided doses
- Dosage for amoebic dysentery, giardiasis, trichomoniasis, and bacterial vaginosis
Interaction
- Mild potential to cause disulfiramlike reactions
- May increase the risk of hemorrhage with oral anticoagulants
- Decreases the clearance of 5-fluorouracil
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ornidazole and other nitroimidazoles
- Central nervous system disorders
- Epilepsy or peripheral neuropathy
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal tract side effects: nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain
- Central nervous system side effects: dizziness, headache, lassitude, somnolence
- Leukopenia and fatigue
- No interactions with alcohol reported
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Adequate clinical trials not conducted
- Prescribed only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to fetus/neonate
Precautions & Warnings
- Prescribed with caution in patients with ataxia, vertigo, and mental confusion
- Rarely reported blood dyscrasia
- Consideration for discontinuation if leukopenia occurs
Use in Special Populations
- Renal Impairment: Supplemental dose for haemodialysis patients
- Hepatic Impairment: Double the interval between doses in severe cases
