Indications

• Treatment of trichomoniasis
• Treatment of giardiasis
• Treatment of amebiasis
• Treatment of bacterial vaginosis
• Prevention of postoperative infections

Pharmacology

Active against protozoa and obligate anaerobic bacteria

Dosage

• Adult dosage for various conditions
• Pediatric dosage for various conditions

Administration

Should be taken with food

Interaction

• Interaction with alcohol and disulfiram
• Interaction with anticoagulants
• Interaction with cyclosporine, lithium, tacrolimus
• Interaction with drugs that induce/inhibit CYP3A4
• Interaction with fluorouracil, fosphenytoin, phenytoin, oxytetracycline

Contraindications

• Contraindicated in patients with blood dyscrasias
• Contraindicated in patients with organic neurological disorders
• Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the compound

Precautions & Warnings

• May produce neurological disturbances
• Contraindicated during the first trimester of pregnancy

• Use in late stages of pregnancy should be justified by potential benefits
• Excreted in breast milk
