Indications
- Radical cure of vivax malaria
Pharmacology
- 8-aminoquinoline antimalarial
- Eliminates exoerythrocytic forms of Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium falciparum
- Disrupts mitochondria and binds to DNA
- Generates reactive oxygen species
- Interferes with electron transport in the parasite
Dosage
- Recommended for radical cure of vivax malaria
- Prevention of relapse in vivax malaria
- Following termination of chloroquine phosphate suppressive therapy
- Administered concurrently with chloroquine phosphate
- 1 tablet (equivalent to 15 mg base) daily for 14 days
Administration
- Should be taken with food
- Take with meals to avoid GI discomfort
Interaction
- Enhanced effect with other drugs that prolong the QT interval
Contraindications
- Acutely ill patients with systemic diseases
- Concurrent use with potentially haemolytic drugs
- Concomitant admin with mepacrine
