Indications

• Treatment of all forms of malaria

Contraindications

• Severe renal insufficiency
• Marked liver parenchymal damage
• Blood dyscrasias

Side Effects

• Skin reactions: drug rash, pruritus, hair loss
• Gastro-intestinal reactions: fullness, nausea, vomiting, stomatitis
• Haematological reactions: leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, megaloblastic anemia
• Other reactions: fatigue, headache, fever, polyneuritis

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Contraindicated during pregnancy
• Excretion in maternal breast milk
• Risks balanced against therapeutic effect
• Nursing mother precaution

Precautions & Warnings

• Impaired renal or hepatic function
• Folate deficiency
• Severe allergy or bronchial asthma
• G6PD deficiency
• Prevent crystalluria
• Avoid excessive sun exposure
• Discontinue at first sign of rash
• Discontinue if folic acid deficiency develops
• Regular CBC monitoring
• Take with food to minimize GI effects
