Indications

• Treatment of gastrointestinal worm infections
• Effective against roundworm, hookworm, pinworm, whipworm, threadworm, and other worm species
• Fast-acting drug
• Acts on nematode nerve ganglia

Pharmacology

• Levamisole is the active laevo-isomer of tetramisole
• Paralyzes susceptible intestinal worms
• Enhances cellular immune responses in humans

Dosage & Administration

• Single administration
• Recommended after a light meal
• Different doses for different age groups
• Additional dose for severe hookworm infection

Interaction

• May increase phenytoin toxicity
• Increases ivermectin bioavailability
• Decreases albendazole bioavailability
• Alcohol causes disulfiram-like reaction

Contraindications

• No absolute contra-indication to the use of Levamisole

Side Effects

• Infrequent and mild side effects
• Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, headache
• Encephalopathy-like syndrome in rare cases

Pregnancy & Lactation

• No teratogenic effects observed in animal studies
• Benefits versus dangers should be weighed during pregnancy

Precautions & Warnings

• No evidence of sedation
• Mild and transient giddiness as an infrequent side effect
• No effect on ability to drive or operate machinery
• Transient fever in case of concurrent microfilaraemia

Overdose Effects

• Possible anticholinesterase activity
• Counter with atropine
• Control blood pressure and respiration
• Avoid sedatives
