Indications
- Treatment of infections by gastrointestinal worm species
- Effective against Ascaris lumbricoides, Necator americanus, Ancylostoma duodenale, Enterobius vermicularis, Trichuris trichuria, Strongyloides stercoralis, Trichostrongylus colubriformis
Pharmacology
Paralyses susceptible intestinal worms and enhances cellular immune responses in humans
Dosage & Administration
- Single administration after a light meal
- Age 1-4 year: 1 Tablet or 5 ml Syrup
- Age 5-15 year: 2 Tablets or 10 ml Syrup
- Age 16 year and over: 3 Tablets or 15 ml Syrup
- Second standard dose suggested in severe hookworm infection
Interaction
- May increase toxicity of phenytoin
- Increases bioavailability of ivermectin
- Decreases bioavailability of albendazole
- Alcohol causes disulfiram-like reaction
Contraindications
No absolute contraindication to the use of Levamisole
Side Effects
- Infrequent and mild
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Giddiness (dizziness)
- Headache
- Encephalopathy-like syndrome in rare cases
Pregnancy & Lactation
Benefits should be weighed against possible dangers during pregnancy
Precautions & Warnings
- No evidence of sedation
- Mild and transient giddiness as infrequent side-effect
- No precautions concerning ability to drive or operate machinery
- Transient fever may occur in case of concurrent microfilaraemia
Overdose Effects
- Counter possible anticholinesterase activity with e.g. atropine
- Control blood pressure and respiration
- Avoid sedatives
