Indications

• Treatment of gastrointestinal worm infections
• Target species: Ascaris lumbricoides, Necator americanus, Ancylostoma duodenal, Enterobius vermicularis, Trichuris trichuria, Strongyloides stercoralis, Trichostrongylus colubriformis

Pharmacology

Levamisole paralyzes susceptible intestinal worms and enhances cellular immune responses in humans

Dosage & Administration

• Age-specific dosages
• Single administration after a light meal
• Optional second dose for severe hookworm infection

Interaction

• May interact with phenytoin, ivermectin, albendazole, and alcohol

Contraindications

No absolute contra-indication to the use of Levamisole

Side Effects

• Infrequent and mild side-effects
• Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, headache
• Encephalopathy-like syndrome reported in rare cases

Pregnancy & Lactation

Caution required; benefits weighed against possible dangers

Precautions & Warnings

• No evidence of sedation
• Mild and transient giddiness as infrequent side-effect
• Transient fever may occur in case of concurrent microfilaraemia

Overdose Effects

• Counter possible anticholinesterase activity with atropine
• Control blood pressure and respiration
• Avoid sedatives
