Indications

Treats threadworms

Pharmacology

Synthetic broad-spectrum anthelmintic
Active against most nematodes and some other worms
Inhibits formation of worms' microtubules
Causes worms' glucose depletion
2-10% oral dose absorbed from GI tract
Peak plasma concentration within 30 minutes to 7 hours
Highly bound to plasma protein
Elimination half-life is 2.8 to 9 hours

Dosage & Administration

100 mg for threadworms: Single dose
100 mg for whipworms, roundworms, hookworms: Twice daily for 3 days
Second dose may be needed after 2 weeks if reinfection occurs

Interaction

Cimetidine may inhibit Mebendol metabolism

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Mebendazole or any component of the formulation

Side Effects

Transient symptoms of abdominal pain and diarrhea
Rash, urticaria, and angioedema
Very rare cases of convulsions
Neutropenia and agranulocytosis

Pregnancy & Lactation

Not recommended in pregnant women
Caution advised when administered to nursing mother

Precautions & Warnings

Periodic assessment of organ system functions
Warning for potential risk to the fetus in women taking Mebendol during pregnancy
Cleanliness is important to prevent reinfection & transmission of the infection

Use in Special Populations

Not extensively studied in children under two years
Relative benefit/risk should be considered in children under two years

Overdose Effects

Gastrointestinal complaints lasting up to a few hours
Vomiting and purging should be induced in case of accidental overdosage
