Indications
- Treatment of threadworms
- Treatment of whipworms
- Treatment of roundworms
- Treatment of hookworms
Pharmacology
- Synthetic broad-spectrum anthelmintic
- Active against most nematodes and some other worms
- Inhibits formation of worms' microtubules
- Causes worms' glucose depletion
- 2-10% oral absorption from gastrointestinal tract
- Peak plasma concentration within 30 minutes to 7 hours
- Highly bound to plasma protein
- Elimination half-life of 2.8 to 9 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Adult and Child over 2 years
- Threadworms: 100 mg or 1 teaspoonful - Single dose
- Whipworms, Roundworms, Hookworms: 100 mg or 1 teaspoonful - Twice daily for 3 days
- Second dose may be needed after 2 weeks if reinfection occurs
Interaction
- Preliminary evidence of cimetidine inhibition of Panamox metabolism
- Resulting in increase in plasma concentration
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Mebendazole or any component of the formulation
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal: Transient symptoms of abdominal pain and diarrhea
- Hypersensitivity: Rash, urticaria, angioedema
- Central Nervous System: Rare cases of convulsions
- Haematologic: Neutropenia and agranulocytosis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended in pregnant women
- Unknown excretion in human milk
- Caution in administration to nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Periodic assessment of organ system functions during prolonged therapy
- Potential risk to the foetus in women taking Panamox during pregnancy
- Cleanliness is important to prevent reinfection and transmission of the infection
Use in Special Populations
- Not extensively studied in children under two years
- Consider relative benefit/risk in treatment of children under two years
Overdose Effects
- Gastrointestinal complaints lasting up to a few hours in case of accidental overdosage
- Vomiting and purging should be induced
