Indications

  • Treatment of threadworms
  • Treatment of whipworms
  • Treatment of roundworms
  • Treatment of hookworms

Pharmacology

  • Synthetic broad-spectrum anthelmintic
  • Active against most nematodes
  • Inhibits formation of worms' microtubules
  • Causes worms' glucose depletion
  • Oral administration
  • Peak plasma concentration within 30 minutes to 7 hours
  • Highly bound to plasma protein
  • Elimination half-life of 2.8 to 9 hours

Dosage & Administration

  • 100 mg dose for threadworms
  • 100 mg dose for whipworms, roundworms, hookworms
  • Twice daily dosage for 3 days for certain infections
  • Reinfection may require a second dose after 2 weeks

Interaction

  • Cimetidine may inhibit Solas metabolism
  • Potential increase in plasma concentration

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Mebendazole
  • Known hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation

Side Effects

  • Transient symptoms of abdominal pain
  • Diarrhoea in case of massive infection
  • Expulsion of worms
  • Rash
  • Urticaria
  • Angioedema
  • Convulsions (very rare cases)
  • Neutropenia
  • Agranulocytosis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended in pregnant women
  • Excretion in human milk unknown
  • Caution advised when administered to a nursing mother

Precautions & Warnings

  • Periodic assessment of organ system functions advisable
  • Assessment of haematopoietic and hepatic functions advisable
  • Potential risk to the fetus in pregnant women
  • Cleanliness important to prevent reinfection & transmission

Use in Special Populations

  • Not extensively studied in children under two years
  • Relative benefit/risk consideration for children under two years

Overdose Effects

  • Accidental overdosage may cause gastrointestinal complaints
  • Vomiting and purging should be induced
