Indications

  • Threadworms
  • Whipworms
  • Roundworms

Pharmacology

  • Synthetic broad-spectrum anthelmintic
  • Active against most nematodes
  • Inhibits formation of worms' microtubules
  • Causes worms' glucose depletion
  • Absorption from GI tract: 2-10%
  • Peak plasma concentration: 30 minutes to 7 hours
  • Highly bound to plasma protein
  • Elimination half-life: 2.8 to 9 hours

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult and Child over 2 years
  • Threadworms: 100 mg or 1 teaspoonful: Single dose
  • Whipworms, Roundworms, Hookworms: 100 mg or 1 teaspoonful: Twice daily for 3 days
  • Possible second dose after 2 weeks if reinfection occurs

Interaction

  • Preliminary evidence of cimetidine inhibition of Seemox metabolism
  • Possible increase in plasma concentration

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Mebendazole or any component of the formulation

Side Effects

  • Transient symptoms of abdominal pain and diarrhea
  • Expulsion of worms
  • Hypersensitivity reactions: Rash, urticaria, angioedema
  • Very rare cases of convulsions
  • Neutropenia and agranulocytosis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended in pregnant women
  • Unknown excretion in human milk
  • Caution recommended during nursing

Precautions & Warnings

  • Periodic assessment of organ system functions during prolonged therapy
  • Potential risk to the fetus during pregnancy
  • Cleanliness important to prevent reinfection & transmission of the infection

Use in Special Populations

  • Paediatric use not extensively studied in children under two years

Overdose Effects

  • Gastrointestinal complaints lasting a few hours
  • Vomiting and purging should be induced in case of accidental overdosage
