Description
- Benzimidazole anthelmintic
- Active against nematodes and cestodes
- Vermicidal, ovicidal, larvicidal activity
- Inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerization
Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum anthelmintic
- Blocks glucose uptake in helminths
- Depletes energy level in helminths
- Exerts anthelmintic effect by immobilization of parasite
- Extensively metabolized, probably in the liver
- Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract
- Rapid extensive first-pass metabolism
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dosage for adults and children over 2 years
- Recommended dosage for children of 1-2 years
- Not recommended for children under 1 year
- Dosing regimen for Hydatid disease (Echinococcosis)

Contraindications
- Not normally used in neonates
- Possible dose reduction in children weighing less than 10 kg
- Should not be given during pregnancy or to women thought to be pregnant
- No evidence to suggest alteration of dose in renal, hepatic, or cardiac failure

- Changes in liver enzymes
- Reversible alopecia (rare)

- Blood disorders including leucopenia and pancytopenia
- Allergic shock if cyst leakage
- Convulsion and meningism in cerebral disease

- Avoided in pregnancy and lactation unless potential benefits outweigh possible risks to the fetus
