Indications
- Treatment of pinworm, roundworm, and hookworm infections
- Specifically indicated for infestations caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, Enterobius vermicularis, Ancylostoma duodenale/Necator americanus, and Trichostrongylus
Pharmacology
- Acts as a depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent
- Causes sudden contraction followed by paralysis of helminths
- Causes worms to lose grip on intestinal wall and be passed out naturally
- May induce complete intestinal obstruction in heavy worm load
Dosage & Administration
- Given orally at any time without regard to ingestion of food or beverages
- Single dose of 11 mg/kg body weight, to a maximum of 1 gm, given to treat infestations caused by specified parasites
- Repeat the dose after an interval of 2 weeks for pinworm infestations
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to pyrantel or any ingredient in the formulation
Side Effects
- Well tolerated in recommended dosage
- May cause gastrointestinal upset in large dosage
- Rare side effects include headache, dizziness, and rash
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not studied in pregnant women, normally contraindicated
- Not recommended for children below 1 year of age
Precautions & Warnings
- Not to be given together with Piperazine
- To be kept out of the reach of children
Use in Special Populations
- Safety and efficacy not established in children <2 years of age
- Use in this age group only when potential benefits justify possible risks
- Use with caution in patients with preexisting liver dysfunction
