Melphin 50 mg/ml (Oral Suspension)

Indications

• Treats intestinal worm infections
• Specifically indicated for infestations caused by certain types of worms
• May be used to self-treat pinworm infections
• Not recommended for children younger than 2 years without doctor's direction

Pharmacology

• Acts as a depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent
• Causes sudden contraction and paralysis of the helminths
• Causes the worm to lose grip on the intestinal wall
• Pyrantel is poorly absorbed by the host's intestine

Dosage & Administration

• Given orally at any time without regard to food or beverages
• Single dose of 11 mg/kg body weight to a maximum of 1 gm
• Wisely repeat the dose after 2 weeks for pinworm infestations

Contraindications

• Known hypersensitivity to pyrantel or any ingredient in the formulation

Side Effects

• Well tolerated in recommended dosage
• May cause gastrointestinal upset in large dosage
• Rare side effects: headache, dizziness, and rash

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Not studied in pregnant women, normally contraindicated
• Not recommended for children below 1 year of age

Precautions & Warnings

• Avoid concurrent use with Piperazine
• Keep out of reach of children

Use in Special Populations

• Safety and efficacy not established in children younger than 2 years
• Use in this age group only when potential benefits justify possible risks
• Use with caution in patients with preexisting liver dysfunction
