Description
- Anthelmintic drug
- Synthetic organic compound
- Highly specific for several parasites
- Does not contain toxic metallic elements
- Mainstay for treatment of patients with lymphatic filariasis and loiasis
Pharmacology
- Sensitizing the microfilariae to phagocytosis
- Activity against Brugia malayi microfilariae
- Dependent on inducible nitric-oxide synthase
- Targets the cyclooxygenase pathway and COX-1
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dosage: 1 mg/kg/day
- May increase to 6 mg/kg/day over 3 days
- Maintenance dosage for 3 weeks
- Prophylaxis of loiasis: 300 mg/week
