Indications

Pharmacology

Ivermectin selectively binds to glutamate-gated chloride ion channels in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells, leading to an increase in the permeability of cell membranes to chloride ions, hyperpolarization of the nerve or muscle cell, and death of the parasite

Dosage & Administration

  • Treatment (If COVIO Positive): 2 Tablets of Ivermectin 6 mg once daily for 5 days
  • Prophylaxis: Single dose based on body weight on Day 1 & Day 7
  • Strongyloidiasis Dosage Guidelines: Dose based on body weight
  • Onchocerciasis Dosage Guidelines: Dose based on body weight

Interaction

Rare reports of increased INR when co-administered with warfarin

  • Nursing Mothers: Excreted in human milk in low concentrations, treatment should be carefully considered

Precautions & Warnings

Potential for Mazzotti reaction, ophthalmological reactions, and severe adverse reactions in patients with onchocerciasis, caution in patients with hyperreactive onchodermatitis or Loa loa infection

Use in Special Populations

  • Pediatric Use: Not established for patients weighing less than 15 kg
  • Geriatric Use: Response in patients aged 65 and over not well-documented
