Dosage and administration

  • Dosage varies by age and formulation (tablet, extended-release tablet, syrup/suspension, suppository, paediatric drop)
  • Maximum daily dose for adults: 4 gm (8 tablets)
  • Extended release tablet: Maximum 6 tablets in 24 hours
  • Specific dosages for children based on age group

Interaction

  • Diminished metabolism with barbiturates, tricyclic antidepressants, and alcohol
  • Increased hepatotoxicity with alcohol
  • Chronic ingestion of anticonvulsants or oral steroid contraceptives may prevent therapeutic levels

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Paracetamol

  • Avoid concurrent use of multiple Paracetamol products

  • Liver damage possible with 10g or more
  • Symptoms include pallor, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
  • Immediate treatment essential
  • Management of serious hepatic dysfunction discussed with NPIS or a liver unit
