Interaction

Precautions & Warnings

  • Care advised for severe renal impairment

  • Hazard of overdose is greater in non-cirrhotic alcoholic liver disease
  • Advice not to exceed the stated dose
  • Advice not to take other Napa-containing products concurrently

Overdose Effects

  • Possible liver damage in adults with 10 g or more intake
  • Liver damage with 5 g or more intake under certain risk factors
  • Symptoms of overdose in the first 24 hours
  • Liver damage becoming apparent 12 to 48 hours after ingestion
  • Abnormalities of glucose metabolism
  • Metabolic acidosis
  • Hepatic failure leading to encephalopathy, haemorrhage, hypoglycaemia, cerebral oedema, and death
  • Acute renal failure with acute tubular necrosis
  • Immediate treatment essential
  • Treatment with activated charcoal within 1 hour of ingestion
  • Measurement of plasma Napa concentration at 4 hours or later after ingestion
  • Treatment with N-acetylcysteine within 24 hours after ingestion
  • Maximum protective effect within 8 hours post-ingestion
  • Intravenous N-acetylcysteine for serious hepatic dysfunction
