Pharmacology
- Has analgesic and antipyretic properties
- Acts primarily in the CNS

Interaction
- Diminished ability to metabolize large doses with barbiturates, tricyclic antidepressants, and alcohol
- Alcohol can increase hepatotoxicity of Xpa overdosage
- Chronic ingestion of anticonvulsants or oral steroid contraceptives may prevent attainment of therapeutic levels
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Paracetamol
Side effects
- Mild side effects
- Haematological reactions including thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, pancytopenia, neutropenia, and agranulocytosis reported
- Occasional occurrences of pancreatitis, skin rashes, and other allergic reactions
Pregnancy and lactation
- No ill effects in recommended dosage during pregnancy
- Excreted in breast milk but not in clinically significant amount
Precautions and warnings
- Use with care in severe renal or severe hepatic impairment
- Hazard of overdose is greater in non-cirrhotic alcoholic liver disease
- Patients advised not to take other Xpa-containing products concurrently
- Use only when clearly necessary
Overdose effects
- Symptoms include pallor, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain
- Possible liver damage with specific risk factors
- Immediate treatment with activated charcoal and N-acetylcysteine essential
