Pharmacology
Combination of Paracetamol and Caffeine with analgesic, antipyretic, weak anti-inflammatory properties, increased solubility and transmembrane permeation, increased pain threshold and tolerance, and vessel tone elevation in the brain
Dosage and administration
- Adult dose: 1-2 tablets every 4-6 hours
- Maximum daily dose: 8 tablets daily
- Child dose: Not recommended for children below 12 years
Interaction
May interact with anticonvulsants, anticoagulants, metoclopramide, domperidone, probenecid, chloramphenicol, colestyramine, and phenothiazine
Contraindications
Contraindicated in severe renal function impairment, hepatic disease, and known hypersensitivity to paracetamol or caffeine
Side effects
Mild side effects include haematological reactions, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, pancytopenia, neutropenia, agranulocytosis, pancreatitis, skin rashes, and allergic reactions
Pregnancy and lactation
Pregnant mothers should consult with doctors before taking Paracetamol & Caffeine; can be taken while breastfeeding
Precautions and warnings
Should be given cautiously in hepatic or renal failure, when taking other hepatotoxic medication, and prolonged use without consulting a physician should be avoided
Overdose effects
Symptoms of Paracetamol overdose include pallor, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain, liver damage, abnormalities of glucose metabolism, and metabolic acidosis
