Indications
- Management of hypertension
- Long-term management of angina pectoris
- Management of acute myocardial infarction
Pharmacology
- Beta1 selective (cardioselective) beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist
- Hydrophilic nature
- Poor penetration of cell membranes
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose of 50 mg
- Can be used alone or with diuretic therapy
- Dose may be increased to 100 mg if needed
- 24-hour control achieved with once-daily dosing
- Intravenous administration for acute myocardial infarction
Interaction
- Additive effect with catecholamine-depleting drugs
- Additive effect with calcium channel blockers
- Possible severe effects with Disopyramide and Amiodarone
- Exacerbation of rebound hypertension with clonidine withdrawal
Contraindications
- Sinus bradycardia
- Heart block greater than first degree
- Cardiogenic shock
- Overt cardiac failure
- Hypersensitivity to atenolol or its components
