Indications
- Management of hypertension
- Long-term management of patients with angina pectoris
- Management of hemodynamically stable patients with definite or suspected acute myocardial infarction
Pharmacology
- Beta1 selective (cardioselective) beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist
- Markedly hydrophilic
- Poor penetration of cell membranes
Dosage and administration
- Initial dose of 50 mg for hypertension
- Initial dose of 50 mg for angina pectoris
- Initiation of treatment with intravenous administration of 5 mg for acute myocardial infarction
Interaction
- Additive effects with catecholamine-depleting drugs
- Additive effects with calcium channel blockers
- Potential severe bradycardia when administered with disopyramide
Contraindications
- Sinus bradycardia
- Greater than first degree heart block
- Cardiogenic shock
- Overt cardiac failure
- Hypersensitivity to atenolol or any components
