Indications

  • Treatment of moderate to severe painful conditions
  • Postoperative pain
  • Colic and spastic pain
  • Cancer pain
  • Joint pain
  • Neck and back pain
  • Pain associated with osteoporosis

Pharmacology

  • Centrally acting synthetic analgesic compound
  • Inhibition of reuptake of neurotransmitters
  • Modification of pain impulse transmission
  • Activation of descending serotonergic pathways
  • Activation of noradrenergic pathways
  • Stimulation of mu-opioid receptors
  • Modulation of central monoaminergic inhibitory pathways

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual doses of 50 to 100 mg every four to six hours
  • Initial dose of 100 mg for acute pain
  • Initial dose of 50 mg for chronic painful conditions
  • Sustained Release Capsule or Tablet dosage every 12 hours
  • Injection dosage of 50-100 mg every 4 to 6 hours
  • Suppository dosage of 100 mg Tramadol Hydrochloride 6 hourly for adults

Interaction

  • Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors interaction
  • Carbamazepine interaction

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to the drug
  • Acute intoxication with specific substances

Precautions & Warnings

  • Respiratory depression risk
  • Not recommended for opioid-dependent patients
  • Cautious use with CNS depressants
  • Cautious use with MAO inhibitors
  • Cautious use in patients with increased intracranial pressure or head injury
  • Cautious use in patients with acute abdominal conditions

Use in Special Populations

  • Safe use in children from the age of 1 year
  • Suppository not to be administered in children and adolescents below the age of 14 years
  • Kadol 100 mg SR Capsules not studied in children
