Indications
- Treatment of moderate to severe painful conditions
- Postoperative pain
- Colic and spastic pain
- Cancer pain
- Joint pain
- Neck and back pain
- Pain associated with osteoporosis
Pharmacology
- Centrally acting synthetic analgesic compound
- Inhibition of reuptake of neurotransmitters
- Stimulation of mu-opioid receptors
- Modulation of central monoaminergic inhibitory pathways
Dosage & Administration
- Usual doses of 50 to 100 mg every four to six hours
- Initial dose of 100 mg for acute pain
- Initial dose of 50 mg for chronic painful conditions
- Sustained release capsule or tablet available
- Injection dosage of 50-100 mg every 4 to 6 hours
- Suppository administration for adults and children
Interaction
- Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors not recommended for combination
- Concomitant administration of carbamazepine
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Tramadol
- Acute intoxication with certain drugs
Side Effects
- Common: dizziness, nausea, constipation, headache
- Less common: malaise, allergic reaction, weight loss
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety in pregnancy not established
- Crosses the placenta
- Not recommended during breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Risk of respiratory depression
- Not recommended for opioid dependent patients
- Use with caution with CNS depressants
- Use with caution in patients taking MAO inhibitors
Use in Special Populations
- Safe use in children from the age of 1 year
- Suppository not recommended in children and adolescents below the age of 14 years
- Safety and efficacy not established in children for 100 mg SR Capsules
