Indications
- Moderate to severe painful conditions
- Postoperative pain
- Colic and spastic pain

Pharmacology
- Centrally acting synthetic analgesic compound
- Inhibits reuptake of neurotransmitters
- Modifies pain impulse transmission
- Stimulation of mu-opioid receptors
Dosage & Administration
- Usual doses of 50 to 100 mg every four to six hours
- Initial dose of 100 mg for acute pain
- Initial dose of 50 mg for chronic painful conditions
- Maximum total daily dosage of 400 mg
- Sustained Release Capsule - one every 12 hours
- Injection dose of 50-100 mg every 4 to 6 hours
- Suppository - 100 mg every 6 hours
- Higher doses for cancer pain and severe post-operative pain
Interaction
- MAO inhibitors not recommended for combination
- Concomitant administration of carbamazepine increases metabolism
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug
- Acute intoxication with alcohol, opioids, or psychotropic drugs

Precautions & Warnings
- Respiratory depression risk
- Not recommended for opioid dependent patients
- Cautious use with CNS depressants
- Cautious use with MAO inhibitors
- Cautious use in patients with increased intracranial pressure or head injury
- Cautious use in patients with acute abdominal conditions
Use in Special Populations
- Dose for children from the age of 1 year - 1-2 mg/kg body weight
- Suppository (100 mg Zydol) not for children and adolescents below the age of 14 years
