Indications
Prophylactic treatment of vascular headache of migraine type such as classical migraine, common migraine and cluster headache
Description
Tricyclic compound with serotonin receptor antagonistic, antihistamine, antibradykinin, weak anticholinergic, and appetite-stimulating properties
Pharmacology
Inhibits peripheral actions of serotonin and histamine, alters pain thresholds in migraines, blocks 5-HT receptors, attenuates serotonin signaling, inhibits bradykinin, may inhibit serotonin reuptake, decreases passive distension of extracranial arteries
Dosage & Administration
Adult dose: usually 1.5mg daily; maximum 4.5mg daily. Children (over 2 years): up to 1.5mg daily
Interaction
Enhances central effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohol; antagonizes hypotensive effect of adrenergic neurone blockers
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients
Side Effects
Appetite stimulation, increase in body weight, drowsiness
Pregnancy & Lactation
Limited information on pregnancy use; safety during lactation not established

Consider urinary retention, renal impairment; drowsiness may affect performance; enhances action of alcohol
