- Myocardial Infarction
- Beta-blocker
Description
- Carsec is indicated in the management of hypertension, long-term management of patients with angina pectoris, and the management of hemodynamically stable patients with definite or suspected acute myocardial infarction to reduce cardiovascular mortality.
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose of Atenolol is 50 mg given as one tablet a day, can be increased to 100 mg for hypertension. For angina pectoris, the initial dose is 50 mg and may be increased to 200 mg for some patients. In acute myocardial infarction, an initial intravenous injection of 5 mg Atenolol followed by 50 mg orally can be given.
Indications
- Used in the management of hypertension, long-term management of patients with angina pectoris, and management of hemodynamically stable patients with definite or suspected acute myocardial infarction.
Pharmacology
- Atenolol is a beta1 selective (cardioselective) beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist with no membrane stability activity and no partial agonist activity.
Interaction
- Catecholamine-depleting drugs, calcium channel blockers, disopyramide, amiodarone, clonidine, prostaglandin synthase inhibiting drugs, history of anaphylactic reaction patients, and digitalis glycosides can all interact with Carsec.
Contraindications
- Sinus bradycardia, heart block greater than first degree, cardiogenic shock, overt cardiac failure, and history of hypersensitivity to atenolol or any of the drug product’s components.
Side Effects
- Adverse effects of Carsec may include potential hematologic, allergic, central nervous system, gastrointestinal, and skin-related adverse effects.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Caution should be exercised when Atenolol is administered to a nursing woman due to clinically significant bradycardia reported in breast-fed infants.
Precautions & Warnings
- Carsec may aggravate peripheral arterial circulatory disorders and should be used with caution in patients with impaired renal function. Dose selection for elderly patients should be cautious, reflecting the greater frequency of decreased hepatic, renal, or cardiac function, and of concomitant disease or other drug therapy.
Use in Special Populations
- Carsec is excreted by the kidneys, so dosage should be adjusted in cases of severe impairment of renal function. The maximum oral dosages recommended for elderly, renal impaired patients and for patients with renal impairment due to other causes are provided.
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms of Carsec overdose may include lethargy, disorder of respiratory drive, wheezing, sinus pause, bradycardia, congestive heart failure, hypotension, bronchospasm, and hypoglycemia. Treatment of overdose may require intensive support care and facilities for applying cardiac and respiratory support.
Therapeutic Class
- Beta-adrenoceptor blocking drugs, Beta-blockers
Storage Conditions
- Do not use later than the date of expiry, keep all medicines out of the reach of children, and dispense only on the prescription of a registered physician.
