Description
- Etnol is an atenolol-based medication indicated for the management of hypertension and angina pectoris, as well as for use in hemodynamically stable patients with definite or suspected acute myocardial infarction to reduce cardiovascular mortality. It is a beta-1 selective (cardioselective) beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist with no membranestability activity and no partial agonist activity.

Interaction
- Catecholamine-depleting drugs may have an additive effect when given with atenolol
- Calcium channel blockers may have an additive effect when given with atenolol
- Concomitant use of disopyramide and atenolol may result in severe bradycardia, asystole, and heart failure
Contraindications
- Sinus bradycardia
- Heart block greater than first degree
- Cardiogenic shock
- Overt cardiac failure
- History of hypersensitivity to atenolol or any of the drug's components
Side Effects
- Bradycardia

- Agranulocytosis
- Allergic reactions (fever, aching and sore throat, laryngospasm, respiratory distress)
- Central nervous system effects (reversible mental depression, short term memory loss)
- Gastrointestinal effects (mesenteric arterial thrombosis, ischemic colitis)
- Other effects (skin rashes, dry eyes)

Precautions
- Evaluation required for patients already on a beta blocker before administration
- Aggravation of peripheral arterial circulatory disorders

Overdose Effects
- Symptoms include lethargy, disorder of respiratory drive, wheezing, sinus pause, bradycardia
