Medicine Details

Indications

  • Relief of signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoidal disorders treatment
  • Acute symptomatic treatment of painful menstruation
  • Treatment of common headache and fever
  • Symptomatic treatment of mild to moderate pain
  • Adjuvant with common cold and influenza associated with headache

Pharmacology

  • Dexibuprofen is the pharmacologically active enantiomer of racemic ibuprofen
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug
  • Analgesic action
  • Inhibits prostaglandin synthesis
  • Absorbed primarily from the small intestine
  • Metabolic transformation in the liver
  • Completely excreted mainly by the kidneys

Dosage & Administration

  • Dosage adjusted to the seriousness of the syndrome and patient's complaints
  • Recommended dosage: 600-900 mg Dexibuprofen per day, at 2-3 divided doses
  • Maximum daily dose is 1200 mg
  • Dosage for dysmenorrhea: 600-900 mg per day

Interaction

  • Simultaneous use of anticoagulant, hydantoine and sulfonamide, ticlopidine, lithium, other NSAID's, ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, cyclosporine
  • Interactions with tacrolimus, corticosteroids, digoxin, methotrexate, pentoxyfiline, phenytoine, probenecid, sulfinpyrazon, sulfonylurea, thiazide and thiazide type diuretics, zidovudine

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Dexibuprofen or other NSAID
  • Previous attack of asthma, bronchospasm, acute rhinitis, urticaria or edema after use of similar drugs
  • Active or suspected hemorrhage
  • Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis
  • Serious heart diseases
  • Kidney function impairment (GFR <30ml/min)
  • Liver function impairment

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in patients with bronchial asthma or other chronic pulmonary diseases
  • Caution in patients with hepatic, renal or cardiac insufficiency
  • Consultation with a doctor for patients with systemic lupus or other autoimmunological disease
  • Caution in active and suspected hemorrhagic conditions such as gastro-duodenal ulcers, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, alcoholism

  • Caution in patients with hepatic impairment

  • Dosage for elderly people

Overdose Effects

  • Low acute toxicities
  • Symptoms occur at doses between 80 and 100 mg/kg body weight
  • Treatment must be symptomatic
  • No specific antidote
  • Activated charcoal administration for large quantities
  • Vomiting induction if life-threatening quantities ingested within 60 minutes
  • Little value of dialysis and hemodialysis as Inflam-D binds strongly to plasma protein
