Indications

  • Relief of signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis
  • Treatment of rheumatoidal disorders
  • Acute symptomatic treatment of painful menstruation
  • Treatment of common headache and fever
  • Symptomatic treatment of mild to moderate pain
  • Adjuvant with common cold and influenza associated with headache

Pharmacology

Dexibuprofen is the pharmacologically active enantiomer of racemic ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug with analgesic action, acting by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis.

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended dosage of 600-900 mg Dexibuprofen per day
  • Maximum daily dose of 1200 mg
  • Specific dosage for dysmenorrhea

Interaction

Reported drug interactions include anticoagulant, hydantoine, sulfonamide, ticlopidine, lithium, other NSAID's, ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, cyclosporine, tacrolimus, corticosteroids, digoxin, methotrexate, pentoxyfiline, phenytoine, probenecid, sulfinpyrazon, sulfonylurea, thiazide and thiazide type diuretics, and zidovudine.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Dexibuprofen or other NSAIDs
  • History of asthma, bronchospasm, acute rhinitis, urticaria, or edema
  • Active or suspected hemorrhage, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, serious heart diseases, kidney function impairment, and liver function impairment

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Caution in patients with hepatic, renal, or cardiac insufficiency, and hypertension
  • Consultation recommended for patients with systemic lupus or other autoimmunological disease
  • Extreme caution in hemorrhagic conditions and for first-time users

Use in Special Populations

  • Caution in hepatic, renal, and cardiac insufficiency
  • Limited use in children under 18 years
  • Reduced start amount for patients with mild to moderate impairments

Overdose Effects

  • Low acute toxicities
  • Symptoms occur at doses between 80 and 100 mg/kg body weight
  • Treatment should be symptomatic with no specific antidote
  • Activated charcoal and induced vomiting in case of large quantities
  • Dialysis of little value as Dexibuprofen binds strongly to plasma proteins
