Indications
- Inflammatory and degenerative forms of rheumatism
- Chronic involutive, polyarthritis, ankylosing spondylarthritis
- Osteoarthritis, spondylarthroses, acute gout, peri-articular rheumatic disorders
- Sprain, bruises, dislocations, fractures, softtissue injuries, surgical interventions
- Primary dysmenorrhoea, episiotomy, adnexitis, endometritis, parametritis, salpingitis, and mastitis
- Pre-operative medication for the prevention of pain, inflammation, and swelling
- Post-operative and post-traumatic pain, inflammation, and swelling
- Prevention of pain and treatment of inflammation and swelling of patients operated in the urogenital tract, renal and biliary colic
Pharmacology
- Potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
- Anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties
- Uricosuric effect
- Inhibition of prostaglandin biosynthesis
- Rapid and complete absorption from the gastro-intestinal tract
- Metabolized in the liver and undergoes first pass metabolism
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage range: 75-150 mg daily
- 2 to 3 divided doses, preferably after food
- Dosage reduction recommended for long term use
- Dosage for children: 1-3 mg of diclofenac/kg body weight daily in divided doses
- Maximum daily dose for adults: 150 mg
- Supplementation with conventional tablets for increased daily dose
- Recommended daily dosage for diclofenac dispersible tablet: 2-3 tablets
- Maximum daily dosage for diclofenac dispersible tablet: 150 mg
- Maximum daily dose for diclofenac suppository: 150 mg
- External application of 2-4 g of diclofenac gel to the affected area 3-4 times daily
Interaction
- Potential interactions with lithium, digoxin, anticoagulants, antidiabetic agents, cyclosporin, methotrexate, quinolone antimicrobials, other NSAIDs, and steroids
- Caution advised for combined therapy with quinolones
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any ingredient of the products
- Peptic ulcer
- Hypersensitivity to Diclofenac or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents
- Contra-indicated in asthmatic patients
Side Effects
- Mild, rare, and transient adverse effects
- Epigastric pain, eructation, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, headache
- Peripheral edema, skin reactions such as rash and eczema
- Local irritation, reddening of the skin, skin rash
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Should be employed only for compelling reasons during pregnancy
- Lowest effective dose should be used
- Not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy
- Not recommended during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Close observation for peptic ulceration or gastrointestinal bleeding
- Special caution for patients with advanced age
- Avoid contact with eyes or mucous membranes
- Do not take by mouth
