Indications
- Management of hypertension

Pharmacology
- β1 selective (cardioselective) β-adrenergic receptor antagonist
- Hydrophilic nature
- Poor penetration of lipid cell membranes
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose of 50 mg for hypertension
- Initial dose of 50 mg for angina pectoris
- Intravenous administration for acute myocardial infarction
Interactions
- Catecholamine-depleting drugs additive effect
- Additive effect with calcium channel blockers
- Potential adverse effects with disopyramide and amiodarone
- Exacerbation of rebound hypertension with clonidine withdrawal
- Decrease in hypotensive effects with prostaglandin synthase inhibiting drugs
- Increased risk of severe allergic reaction with beta blockers
- Risk of bradycardia when used concomitantly with digitalis glycosides
Contraindications
- Sinus bradycardia
- Heart block greater than first degree
- Cardiogenic shock
- Overt cardiac failure
- Hypersensitivity to atenolol or any of the drug product’s components
