Dosage and administration
- Adult Dosage: 75-150 mg daily
- Children Dosage: 1-3 mg of diclofenac/kg body weight daily
- Elderly Patient Dosage: Lowest effective dosage recommended
- Dosage may vary based on tablet type (FC, SR, Dispersible, TR), Suppository, Injection, Gel
- Dosage should be reduced in long term use
Interaction
- May interact with Lithium and Digoxin
- Increased risk of hemorrhage with anticoagulants
- Can be given with oral antidiabetic agents without influencing their clinical effect
- Cases of nephrotoxicity reported with Cyclosporin
- Serious toxicity reported when combined with Methotrexate within 24 hours
- Caution required with quinolone antimicrobials
- Co-administration with other NSAIDs and steroids may increase unwanted effects
- Plasma levels of aspirin reduced when co-administered
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any ingredient
- Peptic ulcer
- Asthmatic patients sensitive to acetylsalicylic acid or prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor
- Avoid use under occlusive airtight dressings
Side effects
- Mild, rare, and transient adverse effects
- Epigastric pain, eructation, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, headache
- Peripheral edema, rash, eczema
- Local irritation and reddening of the skin from Gel
Pregnancy and lactation
- Employ only for compelling reasons during pregnancy
- Lowest effective dose should be used during pregnancy
- Not recommended during first trimester of pregnancy
- Insufficient clinical data for use during pregnancy
- Insignificant quantity may be detected in breast milk
Precautions and warnings
- Close observation for peptic ulceration or gastrointestinal bleeding
- Caution with advanced age
- Avoid contact with eyes or mucus membranes for Gel application
- No contact with mucus membranes after application
- Not to be taken by mouth
