Description
- A medicine for the treatment of rheumatology, surgery, traumatology, obstetrics, gynecology, otorhinolaryngology, dentistry, and other indications. It comes in various dosage forms including tablets, capsules, suppository, injection, and gel.
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage of 75-150 mg daily in 2 to 3 divided doses, preferably after food. Dose should be reduced in long term use.
Pharmacology
- Potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with pronounced anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties. Metabolized in the liver and undergoes first-pass metabolism.
Mode of Action
- Inhibits prostaglandin biosynthesis which plays a major role in causing inflammation, pain, and fever. Rapidly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Indications
- Used for the prevention of pain and treatment of inflammation and swelling in various medical conditions including rheumatism, arthritis, gout, surgery, traumatology, obstetrics, gynecology, otorhinolaryngology, dentistry, and others.
Interaction
- May have interactions with lithium, digoxin, anticoagulants, antidiabetic agents, cyclosporin, methotrexate, quinolone antimicrobials, other NSAIDs, and steroids.
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any ingredient, peptic ulcer, hypersensitivity to Diclofenac, and asthmatic patients where attacks are precipitated by acetylsalicylic acid or other prostaglandin synthetase inhibitors.
Side Effects
- May cause mild, rare, and transient adverse effects such as epigastric pain, eructation, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, peripheral edema, skin reactions, local irritation, reddening of the skin, and skin rash.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Should be employed only for compelling reasons during pregnancy. Not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy. Not recommended during lactation due to the insignificant quantity detected in breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings
- Close observation for rare instances of peptic ulceration or gastrointestinal bleeding. Gel should not contact eyes or mucus membranes, hands must be washed properly after application, and should not be ingested.
