Pharmacology

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties

Dosage & Administration

  • Adults: 75-150 mg daily in 2 to 3 divided doses
  • Preferably after food
  • Dose should be reduced in long term use
  • Diclofenac SR Tablet - 1 tablet daily for adults
  • Children: 1-3 mg of diclofenac/kg body wt. daily in divided doses
  • Elderly patients: Lowest effective dosage is recommended
  • Diclofenac Dispersible Tablet - Recommended daily dosage: 2-3 tablets, maximum daily dose is 150 mg
  • In milder cases, 2 tablets of Diclofenac DT per day are sufficient
  • Diclofenac TR Capsule - One capsule daily, preferably after mealtimes
  • Diclofenac Suppository - For adults: 50 mg suppository 2-3 times daily, maximum daily dose is 150 mg
  • Diclofenac injection - For adults: 1 ampoule daily, in serious cases, dose may be increased to 2 ampoules daily
  • Diclofenac Gel - For external use only, 2-4 g should be applied to the skin 3-4 times daily

Interaction

  • Lithium and digoxin: may increase plasma concentrations
  • Anticoagulants: isolated reports of an increased risk of hemorrhage
  • Antidiabetic agents: can be given together without influencing their clinical effect
  • Cyclosporin: cases of nephrotoxicity reported
  • Methotrexate: cases of serious toxicity reported
  • Quinolone antimicrobials: caution should be exercised
  • Other NSAIDs and steroids: co-administration may increase the frequency of unwanted effects

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to any ingredient
  • Peptic ulcer
  • Hypersensitivity to Diclofenac
  • Contra-indicated in asthmatic patient

Side Effects

Mild, rare, and transient adverse effects such as epigastric pain, eructation, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, peripheral edema, skin reactions, local irritation, reddening of the skin, and skin rash

Pregnancy & Lactation

Should be employed only for compelling reasons during pregnancy, not recommended during the first trimester

Precautions & Warnings

  • Close observation for peptic ulceration or gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Caution to prevent contact with eyes or mucous membranes
  • Hands should be washed properly after application
  • Not to be taken by mouth
